What to Expect When You Walk In

Bowdies Chop House is the type of high-class quality you’d expect to find in Lower Manhattan. The thing is, it’s in cozy Saugatuck. So, you’re surely in for a treat when you book a reservation. When you walk in, you’ll first notice the rustic elegance in the woodgrain and leather appointments. The more rustic elements are perfectly contrasted, and therefore complimented, by the elegant tableware and white linens. This should be your first signal that you’re in for incredible quality food. To start, you’ll want to try any one of their excellent appetizers. From escargot to ceviche to seared pork belly, there’s something to whet your appetite. Then, for those seeking something a little on the lighter side, a selection of soup and salads as well as lighter entrees like pan-seared trout or a roasted half chicken are available. But, for the true essence of Bowdies Chop House, you’ve got to experience the wonder that is their steak.

Bowdies Chophouse Has Incredible Steak

Bowdies Chop House steak is famous for being some of the best in all of Michigan. They serve only 100% USDA Prime beef that has been dry-aged for 28 days. That means, that with every bite, your meal will be bursting with incredible flavor. Though their steaks may cost a pretty penny, that doesn’t mean they’re not worth the price. Take, for example, their Filet Mignon. This customer favorite, 10-ounce choice cut is perfectly seasoned with a house-blended mixture of herbs and spices. And, most importantly, it melts in your mouth for, quite possibly, the best steak you’ve ever had. Or, if you’re looking for a test, Bowdies’ Cowboy Ribeye is 20 ounces of amazing steak flavor, again seasoned to perfection with their blend of herbs and spices. The experience you’ll have at Bowdies is one unlike any other in Saugatuck!

How to Plan the Best Day Ever at Saugatuck Dunes State Park

saugatuck dunes state park

Just outside of Saugatuck is one of the most beautiful state parks in Michigan. The Saugatuck Dunes State Park is a one-of-a-kind park, perfect for the outdoorsman or beachgoer. With miles of hiking trails, pristine beaches, and ideal birdwatching conditions, the park is at the top of the list of things to see and do in the area. Nature enthusiasts will relish in the opportunity to enjoy the sandy causeways and even observe endangered plant species. So, what’s the best way to enjoy Saugatuck Dunes State Park?

Saugatuck Dunes State Park is Teeming with Life

The day-use park is located along an isolated strip of Lake Michigan shoreline. When you come to the Saugatuck Dunes State Park, you’ll encounter over 1,000 acres of land and 2.5 miles of pristine sandy shores. The freshwater coastal dunes can reach up to 200 feet tall, some of the tallest freshwater sand dunes in the world. This incredible land feature creates a unique ecosystem that you can only find here. It also makes for some of the best hiking in the area.

Hiking in the Park

While much of the park is undeveloped, 13 miles of hiking trails lead you into the 1,000 acres of wooded dunes. Wide and well-marked trails wind like a labyrinth throughout the park. In addition to the incredible dunes, you’ll also have a great chance to enjoy some of the best birdwatching conditions in the area. The park is also perfect for nature photographers as many hikers have reported seeing a lot of friendly wildlife! Something to note: while the trails themselves are dog-friendly, the beach is not. Regulations dictate that your dog must be on a 6-foot leash at all times and must not be unattended.

In terms of difficulty, the hike has generally reported being moderately difficult due to the sandy trails. So, if you plan on hiking, be prepared with plenty of water for your trek. And, be certain to pick up after yourself! Don’t pollute what is one of the best-kept state parks in the area!

Beaching It

You’ll have a short hike to the beach, roughly 0.6 miles. So, pack a picnic, don’t bring any glass bottles or containers, and enjoy the solitude of a quiet, protected beach away from all the crowds! Also, fires are not permitted on the beach.

Other Activities in the Dunes

One of the most popular places in the area is Oval Beach, just 15 minutes away from Saugatuck Dunes State Park. The beach has earned an international reputation by being named one of the top 25 beaches in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, one of the top two freshwater beaches in the U.S.A. by National Geographic Traveler magazine, and one of the top five beaches in the U.S.A. by MTV. More recent recognition from the Chicago Tribune named the beach the #1 of the top five beaches and rated it the best beach on Lake Michigan. That’s quite a list of honors! With a concession stand, restrooms, showers, a playground, picnic tables, grills, and ample parking, Oval Beach is just outside of Saugatuck!

The grassy lawn makes a perfect place to set up chairs and invite everybody, and a stepping stone paved aisle is easy to walk.

The garden isn’t the only beautiful spot on site to be married.

Apple Blossom Chapel is charming and perfect for the small, more traditional wedding. Floral patterned carpets line the aisle and beveled glass windows make the chapel a beautiful ceremony venue. In addition, the chapel dressing room is ideal for the bride to get ready. The intimate chapel is great for those wanting a wedding in a small country chapel.

Have Your Reception, Too

For a smaller wedding, the patio is great for a cocktail-style reception with family and friends. You can enjoy the patio from May to October. For a larger wedding reception, the lawn is the perfect place. Rent a tent and receive up to 200 guests after the ceremony. You’ll love the whimsical setting of a reception on the lawn surrounded by blooming gardens.

Other Important Notes

Depending on the package, you have a choice of music systems, decorations for rent, chairs for the reception, flower girl basket, ring bearer pillow, twinkling string lights, a unity table, cupcake stand, and even a punch bowl. 4 of the Best Reasons to Spend Christmas in Michigan

christmas in michigan

If you’re planning a vacation in the winter, a state that experiences heavy snowfall annually like Michigan might not be at the top of your list. However, don’t let the precipitation scare you away – Michigan embodies every essential Christmas element. Cozy fireplaces, snowy evenings, and an atmosphere that encourages community and cheer: if you ask us, that sounds like the perfect place to spend Christmas 2016. There are a lot of things that we love about living in Michigan, and one of them is spending time with the ones closest to us over the holidays. Christmas in Michigan provides the perfect opportunity to do that, and if you stay with us in Saugatuck, you’ll see for yourself why we love it!

4 of the Best Reasons to Spend Christmas in Michigan

1. The Scenery

We’ll start with the most obvious reason: postcard-worthy scenery. What comes to mind when you think of Christmas? Presents, lights, and Santa aside, you might picture smoke rising from chimneys on snow-covered roofs, fir trees, and the gentle glow of streetlamps illuminating gentle snowfalls. That’s what you’ll find here. It’s hard to beat the views that we have in winter! Bundle up and explore the beauty that is Christmas in Michigan.

2. There’s Actually a Town Called Christmas in Michigan

Alright, we couldn’t resist listing this one. A town in Michigan that’s actually called Christmas? Yes, it exists, and yes, it’s celebration of all things Christmas! If you’re looking for the ornaments decorations or anything other Christmas related item, well, this is the place to be. The hotels in town capitalize on the name, and you can stay at places like Evergreen Cottage, White Pine Lodge, and Winter Dreamland. In the winter, snowmobiling is the activity of choice. Note: Christmas is quite a drive from Saugatuck (over six hours). We listed it here not as a local attraction, but more of a reason to visit our state during the holidays. And, well, how could we not talk about such a unique town?

3. Snow

If you live in a state that considers 70 degrees to be chilly, then Christmas for you probably involves palm trees, the sunshine, and flip-flops. There’s no better place to get your fill of snow – or experience it for the first time – than here in Michigan. That white powdery stuff that falls from the sky arrives in feet here, not inches, and transforms the Great Lakes State into a winter wonderland.
