4.1.2 DouglasHistory of Douglas:

The City of the Village of Douglas was settled in the mid-1850s as a lumber town and was paramount in providing the city of Chicago lumber after the fire of 1871.

After all of the available lumber was harvested, Lake Kalamazoo (separating Saugatuck and Douglas) proved to be a great shipping port for local fruit. Saugatuck's artistic flair has trickled over into Douglas over the past few centuries and together they combine to create the Art Coast of Michigan.
